"Trees Are Kind" aims to inspire an appreciation for nature, specifically trees, in young children and environmentally minded adults. This book is meant to "humanize" trees so that children can draw a closer connection to them. It is written in the form of a simple poem, with each couplet accompanied by a colorful illustration of an ever-present squirrel named Sherman and other squirrels and birds. After the introductory couplet, each succeeding couplet describes a "personality trait" of trees honesty, loyalty, patience, steadiness, joyfulness, kindness, generosity, love, courage, sincerity, and fallibility. The love couplet refers to trees' love for the Earth, which they keep cool by absorbing carbon dioxide. By humanizing trees, the book introduces children to the idea that trees are entities, very much like people, that deserve our utmost love and respect. Indeed, science is increasingly showing that trees communicate with each other much like humans communicate with one another.
