Description

This second title in New Holland's 'I am a ...' series introduces a much-loved branch of the mammal class. The basic aspects of habitat, hunting, social behaviour, breeding and relations with humans are covered at an easy-to-grasp level, and the simple rhyming text helps young readers absorb the facts. While the overall content is global, matching the cosmopolitan distribution of dolphins, the species shown in the illustrations and photos are primarily those found around New Zealand - the dusky, bottlenose, Hector's, Maui, orca and others - making this a strong local title. This new series for the very young (4-6) is a first introduction to wildlife, presented in simple and catchy rhyming verses and illustrated both with cute cartoon characters and documentary photographs.

Barbara Todd has written 10 books on marine wildlife, covering topics from albatross and penguins to whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions. She lives on the West Coast of the South Island, spending part of each year researching orca off the Pacific coast of North America. Helen Taylor has a flair for illustrating children's natural history books, with a long list of credits to her name. A Booming in the Night, co-authored with her writer husband Ben Brown, won the NZ Post New Zealand Best Picture Book Award in 2006.
