This reference work for schools introduces the systems of the human body - available as a set or separately The human body is made up of systems of organs, which, when working properly, allow people to go through their daily tasks without a second thought. When the system, or one of its organs, malfunctions, doctors must work with patients to determine optimal treatments to restore organ function and health. Researchers are developing new and improved treatments all the time. This ten-volume set looks at each of the human body's systems in detail. At the beginning of each volume, the author introduces the system and its component parts, explaining how each works and its importance to health. Common malfunctions and diseases of the system are also presented, along with typical tests and treatments. Next, a history of the study of this system traces important discoveries about this body system, and identifies the doctors, scientists, and researchers who made these discoveries. Finally, each volume ends with a discussion about the future of the body system - what researchers are still trying to learn about how the system works, and potential new therapies to solve as-yet-untreatable diseases and injuries. Fascinating facts about each body system, and a list of resources for further information, will help both students and patients locate all they need to know about the body system they are researching. The only reference work to discuss each system in the human body in a full-length format suitable for school students Discusses the parts and functions of each system, the history of discovery and recent breakthroughs, and related diseases and treatments Each volume includes an 8-page insert of colour photographs illustrating the body system and organs, as well as black and white diagrams and illustrations throughout the text
"Although each volume can stand alone, for a full picture of body systems, the set needs to be considered as a unit. Volumes, by professionals in the field, are structured and written for ready understanding by general readers....[I]deal for public libraries, secondary schools, and undergraduates. Recommended. General readers; undergraduates."-Choice
"Good resources for serious inquiries into human physiology, medicine, and even the history of science....This set merits consideration....[t]he individual volumes are also solid candidates for the cirulating collections."-School Library Journal
[A]ccessible and readable. All our reviewers agreed that these books would be suitable for reference use and supplementary reading by A-level students, and that the books would be a valuable addition to a school or departmental library.-School Science Review
[T]he set makes up a highly readable, well-illustrated encyclopedia with a scope and clarity that will serve well all readers who wish to know how our bodies are built and how they function in health and disease.-SB&F
[T]his reference would be a valuable addition to any high-school and undergraduate library with strong physiology and anatomy programs. General readers in public libraries should also find it accessible and informative.-Booklist/Reference Books Bulletin
