A short guide that will help students manage the anxiety that comes with taking high-stakes tests or exams, and contains new research that provides practical guidance for students.
Whether you're preparing for higher education or you're already there, one thing is for sure the tests you need to take are stressful. Perhaps you feel like you don't know how to properly prepare, or you get so nervous that you can't put what you know to paper when the time comes to take an exam.
Manage Test Anxiety While You Study uses cognitive science to explain how memory works, and how to use this to your advantage when retaining knowledge for exams. This knowledge will boost your confidence by showing you how your revision works, and ease the amount of anxiety you feel when you sit down for your next test.
Teacher and researcher Dr Helen Barsham has a doctorate from Cambridge University for her research in test anxiety. Her doctoral research focused on how memory works (an aspect of cognitive science) and the theory of self-efficacy, and combined these ideas to create a model that helps children feel more confident when taking exams. She has been headteacher at Hollygirt School, Nottingham, since September 2021.
