Reviews

Welcoming and accessible text presents the seven chakras and the glorious rainbow bridge they form in this beginners reference to using yogic approaches for self-connection. As the book progresses, an opening list introduces each chakras moniker and Sanskrit name, location, color, and element. Text, meanwhile, notes how to tap into the specific chakra (Clear your Throat Chakra to speak clearly and truthfully), while a facing page proposes activating the given chakra with a simple yoga pose (e.g., Lions Breath Pose). On the following spread, a Lets Make Some Noise! section prompts readers to try out a single-syllable chant (HAAAMMM!), and a Say it Loud, and Say it Proud! section features strengthening affirmations (My voice matters, and I speak my truth). Zohras smooth illustrations utilize flowing lines and natural motifs for an effect that amplifies the works soothing and empowering vibe. Characters are portrayed with varying skin tones. Includes opening and closing notes. Ages 48. (Mar.) * Publishers Weekly *
This book, ostensibly aimed at young audiences, makes a great guide for anyone wanting a better understanding of basic yoga practices. Addressed directly to readers, it essentially provides a script for guiding kids through poses, breathing exercises, and imagery aligned with the seven chakras, traditional energy centers first identified by yogis in ancient India (safety, creativity, confidence, love, expression, intuition, connection). A handy chart introduces each chakra, identifying its associated colors, location within the body, name inSanscrit, and corresponding element (earth, water, fire, air, sound, light, thought). Brief text passages suggest everyday scenarios that can evoke problematic reactions (being afraid, nervous, shy) and offer step-by-step directions for moving into a remedial yoga pose: cobra, cat-cow, child's pose, and so on. Readers are then encouraged to make some noise (each chakra has a distinct syllable/sound) and are given final words of affirmation. The helpful illustrations show a diverse cast of children correctly modeling poses and integrating yoga practices into relatable activities. This is an engaging, thoughtful, and informative guide for kids and adults alike. -- Kathleen McBroom * Booklist *
