Reviews

"I Can Take Time to Think" is a great resource to help young children learn to manage big emotions and solve problems. Through LeBron and his pet turtle, children are introduced to simple yet effective strategies that can help them recognize when they're having big emotions, how to calm their bodies and minds, and learn strategies to resolve conflict. This book is a wonderful tool for parents or educators of young children to use in supporting children's social-emotional development and helping them learn some of the essential skills that will help them form strong friendships, do well in school, and develop a positive sense of self.

There is no better time for this book than now! While teaching students both online and in class during Covid-19 is exactly when we need more social emotional learning tools. I read this book to my class and you could tell it really got them thinking. When they saw how Speedy handled stress they learned it was a great way for them to handle their own stress. We even practice going into our shells like Speedy and taking deep breaths. We often refer back to Speedy and talk about taking time to think. This book was a timely gift to my class. We were all nervous about being back in the classroom and this book gave us tools we could use on a daily basis. Thank you so much for writing this and helping us take time to think!
-Kathleen Skiles M.Ed, Second Grade Teacher/Reading Specialist, Mary Our Queen Catholic School, Omaha, Nebraska

I appreciate that this SEL book gives relatable scenarios as well as the steps to avoid frustration and conflict. I love how there are real activities to use with kids in the classroom to practice!
-Franny Moyer, Ed.D, Head Start Coordinator

The book is phrased positively that all kids can comprehend and be given tools to handle and express their emotions. Having a book to share about feelings helps my students see that they are not alone in their feelings and that emotions are more than just happy and sad. As a class, we are always talking about how complex emotions are and this book helps me give them examples of other emotions that affect all of us! Having the right words for our feelings is the first step in then being able to address and come up with ways to handle our emotions.

I have already used this book with one student who struggles with impulsivity and anger and he is reminded to take time to think the turtle. When he checks in with me through the day, he is better able to use feeling words allowing us to work towards ways to earn his goals. He has been thrilled this week to be able to talk calmly with me and has been earning his daily reward. This has also helped him strengthen his relationships with his peers since he is not angry or feeling like he is in trouble all the time and instead feels successful.

I highly recommend this book to all early elementary teachers and counselors. It provides a great story for students to stop and think and a great way for teachers and counselors to hold discussions.
-Laura Henderson, Teacher, Georgia

I love the way the book shows the management of emotions and the ability to establish positive alternatives for children.

"It showed me how to calm down when I get frustrated to finish my work."
Caelyn, age 8

I Can Take Time To Think by Celestte Dills, is a must have book for all of our preschool classrooms.... The calming lesson's LeBron learns from his pet turtle, Speedy, are great techniques for all of us (young or old) to help us get from our flight or fight brains, to our problem solving brains. Speedy and LeBron provide wonderful techniques for our children to use as they are learning to self-regulate themselves. The wonderful illustrations and simple text, make this book easy for children to connect with the message.
