This collection of 32 Civil War stories based on real people and events of the era is a companion to Voices of the American Revolution and uses the same format and approach. Arranged chronologically, the stories represent a diversity of viewpoints - in gender, ethnicity, age, allegiances, and experiences - and present readers with a realistic account of some of the most important Civil War events, both militarily and otherwise. The introductions provide a historical narrative, then character-focused stories provide lively tellings of historic events, followed by discussion questions and activities. Includes list of resources and glossary. A supplement to history textbooks, this book is for educators and students in grades 4-9.
Each selection is preceded by an overview of story-specific events and a short biographical sketch of the actual person. Follow-up questions and activities are excellent.-School Library Journal
History teachers in grades 4-10 can liven up their Civil War units with this book of 27 stories.-Christian School Teacher
