This book will combine, revise, and extend two existing essays. Essay One, "Extracting the Essence," assesses the potential of machine translation of literature. Essay Two, "AI and Ada," goes on to speculate on possibilities for actual artificial creation of literature. Both pieces exploit Vladimir Nabokov's hyper-conscious literary art as primary reference points. And both must now be updated and augmented in light of recent spectacular progress in generative artificial intelligence (AI), as exemplified by Large Language Models like ChatGPT the task of a third chapter on "Large Literary Models."
