Description

This book examines the Greens' contribution to the changing nature of contemporary German local politics and the effect of local political involvement upon the Greens themselves. The author shows how the established 'unpolitical' nature of Germany's local politics has given way to overtly political and confrontational approaches. This has occurred primarily under the influence of the Greens and the 'New Local Politics'. The book appears at an important juncture for the German Greens with questions being posed about their relevance in a post-unification Germany.

Reviews

'... of considerable value to those interested in the impact of the Greens at the local level of government.' German Politics '... this is a meticulous book. It adds to our knowledge and makes the local dimension of German Green politics more accessible to English-speaking readers.' Environmental Politics 'One of the strengths of the book ... is that it provides valuable insights into the German system of local government.' Local Government Studies "Thomas Scharf has produced a stimulating analysis of Green Party involvement in German local politics. ... it is a valuable contribution to a relatively under-researched area." Graham Timmins, University of Huddersfield "...an excellent contribution to the subject...merits careful reading." West European Politics
