The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was launched amid great hopes and controversy in 1994. More than a dozen years later, progress toward economic integration has stalled. Mexicos economy remains far behind those of Canada and the United States, and such pressing issues as energy security remain unaddressed. In Requiem or Revival scholars and policymakers from all three nations dissect NAFTAs failure to fulfill its early promise and evaluate the prospects for further integration.
"This important collection of essays deftly integrates insights and analysis from domestic politics with developments at the bilateral, regional, and global levels. It is a must read for those interested in understanding why trade negotiations have become so difficult." Michael Hart, Carleton University
|"As NAFTA approaches its end as a preferential free trade agreement, this compelling book explores new ways to approach trade and integration in the region." Luis de la Calle, Ministry of the Economy, Mexico
|"NAFTA has spawned reams of commentary on what went well, such as growth in trade and investment, and what has not been accomplished in the thirteen years since it came into existence. All of this is here, analyzed by insightful scholars. Requiem or Revival is the one book those interested in North America should read now." Sidney Weintraub, Center for Strategic and International Studies
