Reviews

According to the author, this study can be described as a theoretical exploration of the human need for self-determination, an elaboration of a model for a libertarian society, and an account of some recent attempts to institute some of the elements of such a society in Norway. ...' Beginning with Aristotle's views of freedom and slavery, the author summarizes the ideas of Hegel, Marx, Bakunin, and G.D.H. Cole, applying them to the model industrial setting. He argues that workplace democracy as it developed in Norway provides a model for social reform in other industrialized nations. Specifically, Lewis contends, the issue of worker health provides the basis for new legislation aimed toward democratizing the workplace. News from Somewhere is ambitious, highly theoretical, and provocative, and the central thesis is a very debatable one. The book is suitable for advanced students interested in philosophical approaches to labor relations with a background in the field. Upper-division and graduate collections.-Choice
