Where we live impacts our wellbeing - and so is a crucial element in public policy. The relationship between subjective wellbeing and place is not well understood, but it is vitally important. This book provides an analysis of the research thus far and points to ways in which we can improve everyone's wellbeing through an awareness of the influence of geography.

Author Bio

Philip S. Morrison is Professor of Human Geography in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He completed his honours and masters degrees at Victoria University of Wellington and his PhD under a Commonwealth Scholarship at the University of Toronto. His research into local housing markets led to a Research Assistant Professorship at the Centre for Public and Urban Policy and the Department of Regional Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Following his appointment to Victoria University in 1982, Philip turned his attention to the study of local labour markets and was awarded the first Hodge Fellowship by the Social Science Research Fund Committee in 1985. This was followed by a number of visiting appointments including the Urban Studies Journal Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Urban Studies, University of Glasgow, University of Cambridge in 1995, and visiting positions at the University of Melbourne, the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), the Institute of Social Science Research (ISSR) University of Queensland and the University of Groningen among others. Philip was appointed the Henry Lang Fellow by the Institute of Policy Studies in 1999. During this time he began exploring the geographic implications of social policy, which led to his current research into the geography of wellbeing.
