The petroleum industry is arguably the most influential and important industry in the world. This book offers a comprehensive introduction to the economics of oil and natural gas extraction and production along with a detailed discussion of pricing, taxing, and markets of these most valuable commodities. The optimization of the time profile of revenues from individual fields is discussed along with the development of oil pricing, tax systems, and oil and natural gas regulation. This book will be of great value to petroleum engineers, students in business and economics, policy makers, and anyone else interested in the future of petroleum production.
[t]here is surely a place for this well written, clear and revealing text, particularly for those students capable of seeing beyond, and behind, the headlines.-The Journal of Energy Literature
It should readily enter a petroleum economist's library and university reading lists.-The Journal of Energy and Development

This is a short book of high quality....Rognvaldur Hannesson has written a first-class book for economics and business students. He covers a wide range of important topics. His writing is admirably succinct. And because of succinctness, the book is short. The next time I teach an energy econimcs course, Hannesson's Petroleum Economics will be the main text.-The Energy Journal
