This text explores the relationship between the film and television industries in Britain and America, charting the changes in the relationship between them and their relative status in the cultural field. Building on historical scholarship, the text offers a paradigm for theorising the media, analysing the way in which media are structured within the milieu of "cultural technologies". A wide range of films about television are discussed including such classics as "Network" and "Videodrome".
