The very broad scope of coverage in American Indian and Alaska Native periodical publications from 1971-1985 has been the result, in part, of a growing sophistication in the technical aspects of publishing and during the period under consideration here, 1000 or more were begun. The titles have been arranged alphabetically. Each profile presents a narrative history of the publication, where it is known, including information about its founding and demise, editors, content, and affiliations with tribes, organisations or other groups.-The Book Journal
The work is an alphabetical listing of titles with appendixes containing lists of titles by chronology, location, and tribal affiliation, and an index. The 20-page introduction provides excellent background information on the Native American press and types of newspapers included....The cross-referencing from variant titles to the title entry is excellent....Highly recommended for academic and public libraries with an interest in Native American studies.-Choice
This latest contribution to a distinguished series surveys the native American press...from its known beginnings to 1924....An excellent Introduction provides a historical survey....The result is so satisfying--so eminently appropriate to the reference collections of libraries supporting research in American history--that one can only hope that a successor is in the offing.-Reference Books Bulletin
