Description

The author examines the evolving network of high speed railway passenger trains in Western Europe. In addition to placing such train networks in their geographic and economic contexts, the purpose of this study is to introduce the American reader to the European passenger train system, with a view to evaluating its feasibility for high-density areas of the USA and Canada. Beginning with some general concepts of railway economics, planning, construction and operation, the work goes on to describe high speed rail networks in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and Spain, with additional information on Japan and Scandinavia. It is designed to be of interest to scholars and professionals in transport economics and rail systems. Mitchell P. Strohl is also the author of "The International Law of Bays".

Reviews

.,."Strohl has produced an excellent up-to-date book on the status of the world's high-speed passanger rail lines and plans. This is not a "train buff" or "rail fan" book, but rather an impressive scholarly exposition by and American political science professor, longtime resident in Paris, who provides considerable technical detail in terms understandable to the general reader. The book is very comprehensive in its coverage. There is no comparable book. The footnotes, bibliography, and index are excellent. General; advanced undergraduate through faculty; professional."-Choice

In his single, well-organized volume, Europe's High Speed Trains: A study in Geo-Economics, Mitchell Strohl masterfully presents the stories of today's leaders in high-speed rail technology. The bulk of the book is a fascinating showcase of Europe's transportation network that will leave readers longing to ride the rails.-RUM FOR APPLIED RESEARCH AND PUBLIC POLICY
