Shortly after Dunbar goes to work at the Hook ranch, a young ranch hand who aspires to marry the bunkhouse cooks niece is found dead. The niece, Vivian, works at the mercantile in town, and her boss seems to be fond of her. Another cowhand on the ranch also fancies her, but he, too, ends up dead and has the first dead mans watch in his possession.
Meanwhile, Dunbars lady friend, Medora Deville, comes to town and starts up a café. Vivian goes to work for her, as does a street girl, Madeline Osborn. Dunbar and Ryerson, the bunkhouse cook who tells the story, interview Madeline and learn that her former clients included the store owner and the two cowhands who are now dead. Dunbar and Ryerson go to a local brothel to learn more, and there they see an emerald-and-diamond pendant that the first cowhand wanted to give to Vivian.
A lackey comes to the bunkhouse in the night and fires a shot, only to be shot by Dunbar. Back in town, Dunbar and the narrator learn that Madeline, the street girl, has been killed. From there, they go to the Blue Diamond brothel and pursue the killer and his accomplice across a snowy landscape.
