Texas was a proud lady, crying out for freedom, and angry, romantic men went hell-for-leather to her rescue.
Joel Barnett did not set out to join Texas war for independence. Just out of law school, he was headed from Kentucky down the Mississippi on a flatboat to open an office in New Orleans. But a chain of events, starting with the rescue of a young woman who jumped into the river from a steamboat, led Joel and his two Kentucky river companions into the Texas fight. Turns out, she was the daughter of a Texas politician who was being imprisoned illegally by the Mexicans, and there was a bounty on her head! Joels adventurous spirit insisted he follow this through to the end.
Soon Joel and his friends were deep in itfighting Mexican soldiers, being taken hostage and escaping, and rescuing, once more, the woman that he was beginning to realize that he loved. And along the way, he also developed a love for the land of Texas and dedicated himself to her fight for independence.
