Description

In 1693, the settlers on the small Maine island of Sanctuary were betrayed to their enemies and slaughtered. Since then, the island has known three hundred years of peace. Until now. For men are descending on Sanctuary, their purpose to hunt down and kill the wife of their leader and retrieve the money that she stole from him.

All that stands in their way are a young rookie officer, Sharon Macy, and the island's strange, troubled policeman, the giant known as Melancholy Joe Dupree. But Joe Dupree is no ordinary policeman. He is the guardian of the island's secrets, the repository of its memories. He knows that Sanctuary has been steeped in blood once; it will tolerate the shedding of blood no longer. Now a band of killers is set to desecrate Sanctuary and unleash the fury of its ghosts upon themselves and all who stand by them. On Sanctuary, evil is about to meet its match.

Reviews

Remarkably assured and atmospheric crime novel . . . each successive Connolly novel has grown in authority and skill. . . Crime, horror and the supernatural are blended in a queasy mix that often has an almost physical impact on the reader. - Sunday Express

Bad Men is thoughtful, dark and absolutely addictive - Irish Times

John Connolly writes like an angel, but about evil men and their diabolical deeds. . . Written with some style and by a man completely at ease with his work, Bad Men is probably John Connolly's best novel yet. It is five-star chill with enough menace to keep the pages turning well into the wee small hours. - Irish Times

Will the film version be directed by John Carpenter or Quentin Tarantino . . . Connolly spins his gruesome yarn with relish - Mail on Sunday

A unique blend of crime and horror - Crime Time

In the crowded killing fields of crime fiction, John Connolly has quickly and decisively established himself as a unique voice. With BAD MEN he does it again, giving us a powerful story that is dark, daring and original. This one is his best. - Michael Connelly

Think Thomas Harris by way of Stephen King: haunting, compelling, but not for the faint of heart. - Publishers Weekly

Connolly writes like a poet . . . A stylish darkness sucks you under. - Kirkus Reviews

Author Bio

John Connolly is the first non-American writer to win the US Shamus award and the first Irish writer to win an Edgar award. His debut - EVERY DEAD THING - introduced the character of Private Investigator Charlie Parker, and swiftly launched him right into the front rank of thriller writers. All his subsequent novels have been Sunday Times bestsellers. Before becoming a novelist, he spent five years working as a journalist for The Irish Times, to which he continues to contribute. In 2007 he was awarded the Irish Post Award for Literature. BOOKS TO DIE FOR, which he edited with Declan Burke, was the winner of the 2013 Anthony, Agatha and Macavity awards for Best Non-Fiction work.
