The inspiration for the long-running Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, this Victorian novel originally appeared in installments as one of the era's popular penny dreadfuls. Readers and audiences remain spellbound by the tale of a murderous barber and baker who recycle their victims into meat pies.
The authorship is a bit of a mystery. Thomas Peckett Prest was known as the "king of the bloods," although many scholars attribute the story to James Malcolm Rymer, an equally famous writer of penny dreadfuls.
