Set in the remote forests of Appalachia and later in Greece, the novel follows four troubled souls who get high and sing in four-part harmony as they 'walk away' from their miserable old lives and into the infinitely-spiraling fractals of mellower tomorrows. The baritone old banker and the beautiful but bitchy bag lady soon fall in love, as do the brainy bookworm and the burly baker. The four of them eventually start a successful business together, but when the bag lady dreams of an approaching pandemic, they sell their chain of marijuana bakeries and move halfway around the world to the 'Isle of Rhodes' to ride it out.
Johnny Spurlock (born 1951) is an Appalachian musician, novelist and trail enthusiast who was born in Eastern Kentucky where he still presently resides. He is the direct descendant of Prestonsburg's first settler whose name was also John Spurlock. Johnny credits his late father, a banker, for giving him his lifelong interest in hiking trails and for teaching him to play the baritone ukulele.
