Rev. Janice Bowker is an English vicar [ordained church minister], who now lives and works in Florida, USA. This children's chapter book is set in a fictional British kingdom called Merryweather, with King Alfred and Queen Rosamund; they live an idyllic life in the country that they rule. The story is about the king's kindness to others and his willingness to help and do good work in the kingdom. The book is an original story written for her two grandchildren, and other children in her family; it's full of joy, happiness and good works. King Alfred is a happy man who is married the Queen Rosamund; he wants to find a way to be with his people, and get to know them, in an ordinary way so that he can do some good and help people; the king wants to get on their level so that they don't look at him as a king all the time. King Alfred wants to be an ordinary person some of the time, but he realized that he still had his kingly duties to perform; he enjoys having a day off from being king sometimes, when nobody knows who he really is. He had spent his whole life as a prince and then became king and he felt he had missed out on an ordinary life. He decides to disguise himself and get out of the castle; he gets to know his people, do some good work and help people; everyone thinks he is a very kind man called Alf.This chapter book can be read by children, or it can be read to children by parents, grandparents or siblings.
