These previously uncollected stories encapsulate Jane Manders appeal as a short fiction writer. They are lively to read and demonstrate her finesse as a prose stylist, but they have another attraction: a focus on strong and distinctive female characters and on the compromises, sacrifices and devotion their convictions demand.
JANE MANDER (18771949) was a pioneering journalist and novelist, remembered for The Story of a New Zealand River, about an Englishwoman who has to adjust to living in an isolated timber-mill settlement. Polly Hoskins (editor), graduated MA with distinction in English at the University of Canterbury, and was president of the Drama Society. She won the Howard McNaughton Prize in Cultural Studies (2016) and a university Blue for literature (2019). She is the author of Ngaio Marshs Hamlet: the 1943 production script.
