Daniel Defoe (c.16601731) was a merchant, dissenter, pamphleteer, free-thinker and novelist at the birth of the novel as a form of literature. Robinson Crusoe (1719) and Moll Flanders (1722) are amongst his many achievements. With over 300 other publications during his lifetime, he is regarded as one of the most influential and significant writers of all time.
