First published in 1923 in Paris, this short novel by the great American poet is a satire on the novel form in which a little [female] Ford car falls more or less in love with a Mack truck', as Webster Schott writes. For the most part, however, the work is a serious attempt to write a novel with the recognition that such an act is nearly impossible to accomplish within established conventions, and, in the end, Williams pokes great fun at all those serious young authors bearing the burden of their attempts to write the 'great novel'.'
