The tale of Heathcliff and Cathys ungovernable love and suffering, and the havoc that their passion wreaks on the families of the Earnshaws and the Lintons, shocked the books first readers, with even Emilys sister Charlotte wondering whether it is right or advisable to create beings like Heathcliff . Replete with unforgettable characters and situations that have seared themselves into our literary consciousness, Emily Brontes intense masterpiece is one of the most haunting love stories in the canon of English literature.
She looked out upon a world cleft into gigantic disorder and felt within her the power to unite it in a book... She could free life from its dependence on facts; with a few touches indicate the spirit of a face so that it needs no body; by speaking of the moor make the wind blow and the thunder roar. -- Virginia Woolf
As I crouched in a corner with a copy of Wuthering Heights, I had the sensation that it was not the torch that was lighting up this intimate space, but the book itself. The book was radiant, the words shone. -- Jeanette Winterson
A masterpiece I still get shivers down my spine whenever I read the words of Cathy: I am Heathcliff! -- Bonnie Greer
Born in 1818, Emily was the middle of the three famous Bront sisters. Raised on the Yorkshire moors by her clergyman father, Emily spent her childhood inventing and writing about imaginary worlds with her siblings. Wuthering heights was her only novel, for which she enjoyed much fame in her lifetime. She died of tuberculosis in 1848, after having refused all medical treatment.
