Description

Tulsi Gurung arrives in Pennsylvania on a day so impossibly damp and gray he wonders if hes landed on the underside of the world. He is sixteen and brimming with wonder and fear. Until now, Tulsi has spent his entire life within the confines of Refugee Camp Goldhap along with tens of thousands of other Lhotshampasethnically Nepalese inhabitants of Bhutanlabeled outsiders by the Bhutanese Monarchy and forced from their homes. Born and raised in the camp, Tulsi is technically a refugee from Bhutan, a land hes never set eyes on.

Reunited with his grandfather, Tulsi struggles to navigate his new life, his new country, and his raw separation from his beloved sister Susmita, the person who truly tethers him to the world.

As he comes of age in a strange land, navigating first friendships, loss and loneliness, the underbelly of illegal gambling and the pull of old loyalties, Tulsi must confront the wound Susmitas loss has left in him and whether he has remained someone she would recognize.

Author Bio

Eugene Cross is the author of the story collection Fires of Our Choosing, which was named the Gold Medal winner in the Short Story category by the Independent Publisher Book Awards. He's taught creative writing at Northwestern, Penn State, The University of Chicago, and other institutions. His stories have appeared in Glimmer Train, American Short Fiction, Story Quarterly, and Callaloo, among other publications. His work was also listed among the 2010 and 2015 Best American Short Stories' 100 Distinguished Stories. He is the recipient of scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers Conference and fellowships from NBC, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, the Yaddo Artists' Colony, and the Sewanee Writers' Conference. Eugene writes for TV and lives in Los Angeles with his wife and two sons.
