SECOND DRAFT OF MY LIFE is the story of unsuccessful novelist Charlotte Dearborn, who after years of effort finally decides to give up on her writing career to take a job with a modest but steady income. She starts work as a first-grade teacher. Now that she has given up her dream, she feels sure that she'll finally find a satisfying relationship and a less stressful work life. After all, she's earned both after twenty years of heartbreak, struggle, and disappointment. But teaching first grade is harder than Charlotte expects. Desperate for advice on how to improve her life, Charlotte calls upon her imagination and creates a whimsical how-to guide for the model teacher. Following her own instructions, Charlotte slowly begins to turn her life around. Her students and co-workers begin to acknowledge her with respect. Her usual junk food cravings seemingly disappear not to mention those love handles. Could it be that Charlotte has moved on to a more complete second draft of her life
Houston Chronicle Witty and bittersweet...Lewis writes with a companionable ease...Flashes of humor shine throughout the novel, at times reaching drop-the-book-while-laughing brilliance. San Diego Union-Tribune There is something honest and sweet that just works here, something so straightforward and hopeful and true that it cancels out any criticism.
Sara Lewis is the author of three other novels, THE ANSWER IS YES, BUT I LOVE YOU ANYWAY (Abacus), and HEART CONDITIONS (Abacus), as well as the collection TRYING TO SMILE AND OTHER STORIES. She lives in San Diego.
