Oodgeroo was born on 3 November 1920 on Stradbroke Island in Queensland. Most Australians know her as Kath Walker, the name she was given by white people, but in 1988 she decided to change her name to identify more closely with her Aboriginal heritage. Oodgeroo died in 1993, she is remembered as a poet, artist and political activist. She urged respect for the past, the need for conservation and the unity of mankind.Bronwyn Bancroft is an Aboriginal artist who grew up in Tenterfield, and is a descendant of the Bundjalung people.
