Author Bio

Essie Chambers earned her MFA in creative writing from Columbia University and has received fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and Baldwin for the Arts. A former film and television executive, she was a producer on the documentary Descendant, which was released by the Obamas' Higher Ground production company and Netflix in 2022. Swift River is her debut novel. Shayna Small is an actress, singer, and educator based in New York, where she received her BFA in Drama from the Juilliard School. She has worked across a variety of media including theater, film and tv, music and voice-over. Janina Edwards, a graduate of New York University's Tisch Schools of the Arts, recorded her first audiobook in 1987. She was born in Chicago, soaked in New York City's African and West Indian accents for 11 years, and for the past twenty years has swum in the swagger of the south (Atlanta, Georgia). As a result, she excels in portraying authentic characters and voices the African Diaspora. Her 2018 audiobook, The Wedding Date, is an AudioFile Earphones Award winner, and Voice of Freedom (2016, Dreamscape) was an Audie Award finalist. In addition to narrating audiobooks, she is a certified yoga teacher, sings kirtan, and plays the violin. Robin Miles, dubbed "a voice that never disappoints," is an AudioFile Golden Voice, an Audible Hall of Famer, the 2014 Booklist Voice of Choice, a 2009 Grammy finalist director, and winner of over forty Best of the Year and Earphones awards. Her chameleon-like vocal and acting ability have won accolades for their nuance and variety. Her credits include Hugo winners The Fifth Season trilogy (N. K. Jemisin) and Binti (Nnedi Okorafor); Hidden Figures (Margot Lee Shetterley); The Warmth of Other Suns (Isabel Wilkerson); The Violet Hour (Broadway); several regional productions and museum installations; and Law & Order. Robin holds degrees from Yale (BA) and The Yale School of Drama (MFA), and owns Voxpertise, Inc., a studio for voice-over training and production. Ariel Blake is a Black and Guyanese (American) theater artist, teacher, abolitionist & birth keeper based in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Her voice can also be heard narrating An Abolitionist's Handbook by Patrisse Cullors and Raven Leilani's Luster among other titles.
