Ford produced this work in 1915 and it is regarded by most to be his defining masterpiece. This is the saddest story', the narrator notes of his friend Edward Ashburnham's life. Ford Madox Ford was a novelist, poet, literary critic, editor and one of the founding fathers of English Modernism. Ford published over 80 books, including The Fifth Queen and The Parade's End. A frequent theme of his was the conflict between traditional British values and those of modern industrial society. He died in 1939.
