Description

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics.
There was a contagion in the very air that blew from that haunted region; it breathed forth an atmosphere of dreams and fancies infecting all the land.

Featuring The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle, this collection of inspired essays, stories and sketches established Washington Irvings reputation as one of Americas foremost authors. Irvings timeless characters, including Ichabod Crane, Rip Van Winkle and the headless Hessian trooper, jostle for space alongside 31 equally atmospheric and lyrical works in this haunting anthology from one of Americas most distinctive literary voices.

Author Bio

Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American essayist, historian, and author. One of the first noted American authors to be highly acclaimed in Europe during his life time, Irving was a prolific author of fiction and non-fiction. He wrote numerous short stories, biographies, histories, and tales of his travels. His characters Ichabod Crane and Rip van Winkle are now icons of popular American culture, and many of Irving's works have inspired adaptations to the stage and film.
