Description

In 1845, the Devil first comes to the woman living on the Laurent plantation, and to her two twin children: one a dark-skinned girl, and the other a light-skinned boy. Over the decades, he returns to their tangled family tree, with each generation facing its own heartaches, challenges and fears.

There is Walter Laurent, consumed by the fire of old-time religion, and his son Louis, tortured by his desire for his brother's wife.

There is Cassandra, who smells colours and talks to the dead, and Porter and James, who are both in love with her.

And finally there are Lucy and John who, no matter how much distance they try to put behind them, find themselves pulled back home.
