Young Harry Moto has problems with fallen arches, crinkly hair that won't flatten down, a plump chest and, for a white man, unusually dark skin. Harry's appearance provokes mercilessly sarcastic tauting from his school mates but, living in South Africa, it is not surprising that it is his skin colour which eventually brings about his downfall.
'A Separate Development is one of the best books ever written about South Africa' Peter Porter, Observer 'Hope's comic vision of this crazy and tragic state of affairs expertly brings off the difficult feat of providing both an entertaining novel, rich in lovingly evoked detail and character, and a profound political indictment.' William Boyd, Sunday Times 'A remarkable first novel... exquisitely funny.' Literary Review
