Mary Caponegro is a writer whose work has been compared to David Foster Wallace and Nicholson Baker, and who has received glowing praise from all the masters of post-modernism, including Robert Coover, Gilbert Sorrentiino, William Gass, and John Hawkes. In this collectionin the works for 7 yearsshe veers away from the surreal fabulism of previous work to put a new shine on realisms old faade. Both more accessible and more character-driven, these stories of relationships on the fritz touch on topical events (9/11) and issues (abortion; a biracial, lesbian couple in Colorado), while retaining their deeply psychological subject matter and the lush, lyrical style for which she is known, and could bring her a brand new audience.
Mary Caponegro's story collections include The Star Caf and The Complexities of Intimacy. Her stories have been anthologized in The Anchor Book of New American Fiction, The Italian American Reader, and Wild Dreams: The Best of Italian Americana. Born in Brooklyn, she has lived in Italy and now resides in the Hudson Valley where she teaches at Bard College.
