Addie's Legacy, is a glimpse into the late 1800's as seen first from her eyes as a civil war orphan and then through her maturing vision. Challenges in a New York orphanage, a disturbed marriage as a young bride, and her break to become a woman in control of her own destiny fill the pages with both tenderness and excitement.Addie's story can be told only by me, her granddaughter. Her own daughter knew little of her outrageous adventures. Yet, through genealogical research and travel to the places where she lived I became part of her life. I'm sorry to never have met the red-headed woman who gave me the strength and fortitude to live mine to the fullest.
Throughout life's adventures and a career as an educator in remote Alaska, Thailand and the United States there lurked a novelist. Shirl's early work was technical: a dissertation on in-service teacher training, papers on second language learning, topical workshop documents.... Now she has written several short stories, various poems and this first novel. Her short story 'She and Her Daughter' won first place in an Oregon writing contest and was subsequently published with Burnside Press. An excerpt from Addie's Legacy won first place at Write On The Sound Writers' Conference in Washington State where she was awarded professional editing. She has completed several other short stories and has begun a sequel to Addie's Legacy.
