One of the earliest examples of steampunk literature, this 1868 tale was also among the first American science-fiction novels and the very first literary instance of a mechanical man. Extremely popular and much imitated in its day, the story concerns a teenage inventor who constructs an automaton to help him explore the American prairie.
Edward S. Ellis (1840-1916) produced hundreds of books and articles, both under his own name and under more than a dozen pen names. Best known for his Deerfoot novels of the Old West, Ellis also wrote works of biography and history.
