Coming of age during the Depression, Bette McCaslin faces a troubled world. Her parents have taken in Gretel, a Jewish girl her same age sent to the U.S. by her family from Nazi Germany. In the KKK South this is met with animosity. As Bette finishes high school, she falls in love with Curt Sinclair, who applauds her familys decision. The two become informally engaged and Bette dreams of a future as a wife and mother, clipping recipes and living the quiet life.

But Hitler and others who seek world domination interfere with her plans. Bette never considered being a spy even in her wildest dreams. But when J. Edgar Hoover, FBI chief, asks her to be part of an investigation (unofficially, of course), she says yes. She will do anything to stop those who are persecuting Gretels family. But after swearing an oath, she can tell no onenot even Curt.

Then the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor and war crashes over them all. When the wars won, she thought she knew how it would all end but shes finding that isnt so. Now, which will she choosethe young man she fell in love with as a girl, or the man who taught her how to be a spy
