Countless artists have painted Robert E. Howard's characters through the years, but none have done so more brilliantly than legendary Spanish painter Manuel Prez Clemente Sanjulin. With the impact of a battle axe, Sword's Edge collects an action-filled brace of paintings that brings Howard's classic stories to vivid life for a new generation of enthusiasts. Best known in the United States for his cover paintings for the comic magazine Vampirella, Sanjulin has been rightly called an artist's artist for his masterful compositions and vibrant use of color. Honored by the Society of Illustrators, he has created his numerous book jackets for a diverse range of publishers.
Manual Perez Clemente (better known as Sanjulian): Born in Barcelona, Sanjulian studied at the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts. Initially working for the comic section, his full colour works are now being seen worldwide. In the 1980s Sanjulian worked for Warren Publishing on titles like Creepy, Eerie, and Famous Monsters, but he is mainly associated with the Vampirella title, for which he illustrated many classic covers. Sanjulian has worked for various US publishers, including Dell, Ace, DAW, Bantam, Fawcett and Berkeley, Grove Press, Pocket, and Harlequin. He has created paintings for such diverse spheres as Reader's Digest and horror maestro Clive Barker. Sanjulian has had several shows at the Society of Illustrators in New York and his work has appeared in many fine art galleries in Europe. His paintings have often been compared to Velazquez in terms of palette and technical ability.
