First recorded in 1000 A.D., the epic tale of the warrior-prince Beowulf is reinvented through Gareth Hinds' masterful and darkly beautiful illustrations. Grendel's black blood runs thick as Beowulf defeats the monster and his hideous mother, and red fires rage in the hero's final battle against a ferocious dragon. From lightning-paced contests of muscle and will to the funeral boats burning on the fjords, all are rendered in glorious and gruesome detail. Told for more than a thousand years, Beowulf finds a true home in this graphic novel edition, which makes the heroic saga instantly accessible to younger readers.
"The book makes a gorgeous whole... will have high appeal for many, particularly fans of video games and action movies." Booklist, USA"
Gareth Hinds has been drawing visual stories since his earliest childhood. Beowulf is his first fully painted graphic novel. He says, "I really enjoy working with classics for the richness and depth of the material. Beowulf gave me the chance to explore one of the traditional comic-book genres - the superhero story - in a more timeless way, without the skintight suits and some of the other wacky conventions of that genre. I want to show people how cool a story this really is." He lives in Massachusetts, USA.
