Description

Many books have been written about dementia, usually dealing with the symptoms and the medical side of the condition. But here is a thoroughly practical book for carers and families, written by someone with first-hand experience of caring for a person with dementia over many years. Drawing on real-life situations, this book brings together a wealth of information not easily found elsewhere. It provides solutions to a vast range of situations the carer is likely to encounter -- from organising legal and financial affairs, to ways of coping with the symptoms of dementia, such as aggression, hallucinations, incontinence and decreasing mental powers. It also contains thousands of hints for dealing with dementia on a daily basis, including adapting the home environment; showering, dressing, eating and drinking; keeping the mind stimulated; and communicating well with family, friends and professionals, as well as with each other. The personal stories throughout the book are inspiring, sobering and at times amusing. This book is full of the wisdom and insights of experienced carers, and has much to offer anyone new to this role.

Reviews

Carers are the most special people in the world to those affected by dementia. Here Angela Caughey draws on her personal journey with dementia care, writing with unbounded love and compassion, to provide vital support and invaluable advice for others. This is essential reading for all those touched by this increasing global disease. - Professor Richard Faull (ONZM, FRSNZ Director, Centre for Brain Research, University of Auckland) This practical guide has a common-sense approach to the problems carers face from day to day. It is also a reality check for professionals, who cannot possibly know what families really experience. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone involved in caring for people with dementia. - Dr Hilary Birch, Clinical Director Older People's Health, Auckland City Hospital As more and more of us have to grapple with the consequences of an ageing population, dementia carers will find great comfort and support in this book. Angela Caughey's guide for carers will be of enormous help to the many thousands of people who are trying to cope with dementia on a daily basis. It is full of encouragement and practical help. - Max Ritchie (Executive Director, Neurological Foundation of New Zealand)

Author Bio

Angela Caughey began writing in the mid-1980s, and is the author of four previous books. For more than 12 years she took care of her husband, who had dementia. She read widely around the subject, but found that none of the books included the practical hints for carers that she and her support group needed. She brings these together here for the benefit of all carers.
