The Cold Truths About Covid-19 From America's Former Top Doctor
As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to plague America and the world, there has been one constanta lack of consistent, verifiable, scientifically-sound information about the dangers, risks, and mitigation strategies that the average person can understand and put into practice to keep themselves and their families safe.
As politicians and self-interested media personalities spread disinformation for their own purposes, most of us have been left scratching our heads, wondering what is true and what isn't. Now the former Surgeon General of the United States, freed from the political constraints he worked under in public office, can reveal all the information that Americans need to create a safe environment for their families at home, in public, and in their wider communities.
As Dr. Adams explains, the best Covid policies are the ones which begin at home, and which come about as people in local communities work together to find a solution that fits their specific needs. Only through this bottom-up, community-driven approach will we finally make our way out of the pandemic.
As the 20th U.S. Surgeon General and a former member of the White House Coronavirus task force, Jerome Adams, MD, MPH, FASA has been at the forefront of Americas most pressing health challenges. A regular communicator via TV, radio, and in print, Dr. Adams is an expert not just in the sciences, but also in communicating science to the lay public and making it relevant to various audiences.
Dr. Adams is a licensed anesthesiologist with a masters degree in public health from UC Berkeley. He ran the Indiana State Department of Health for three years prior to being confirmed as Surgeon General. In the State Health Commissioner role, he led Indianas response to Ebola, Zika, and HIV crises. Notably, Dr. Adams helped convince the Governor and State Legislature to legalize syringe service programs in the state, and to prioritize $13 million in funding to combat infant mortality. As Surgeon General, Dr. Adams was the operational head of the 6,000-person Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and oversaw responses to three back-to-back category 5 hurricanes, and to a once-in-a century pandemic.
In addition to his COVID-19 work, Dr. Adams has partnered with and assisted organizations as they navigate the opioid epidemic, support infant and maternal health, address rising rates of chronic disease, and mitigate the impacts of rising suicide rates in our Nation. In 2021, he released a historic Surgeon Generals report titled Community Health and Economic Prosperity: A Digest of the Surgeon Generals Reportfor Business Leaders, detailing how businesses can become better stewards and stakeholders in promoting community health.
Currently, Dr. Adams serves as a Distinguished Professor and the Director of Health Equity initiatives at Purdue University. He is also a medical correspondent for WISH-TV in Indianapolis, and practices and teaches Anesthesiology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He has a wife, Lacey, who has recently and publicly spoken of her battle with metastatic melanoma, and is the father of three school-age children, Caden, Eli, and Millie, and two dogs, Bella and Ruby.
