For expecting mothers, yoga is a great way to prepare for birth. Drawing on her long experience as a teacher, Theresa Jamieson has selected exercises and postures that are specific for pregnancy, safe and gentle, and take into account the pregnant body's ever-changing needs. Colour photography illustrates the postures, or 'asanas', that work best for relaxation and flexibility, while breathing techniques of 'pranayama', or conscious breathing, and meditation allow women to focus their minds. In addition, seven complete yoga programs are provided that can take pregnant women from the early stages of their journey through the post-natal experience.
Theresa started practicing yoga in 1975 in Melbourne and continued her interest in yoga while travelling in India and living in London. She lived in NZ for 6 years where she taught a large class in a provincial town for two years before moving to Auckland. She lived there for 4 years and completed a three year Naturopathic course and also studied many aspects of yoga more seriously with the Satyananda Ashram. During her first pregnancy with her son Ezra she continued her yoga practice under the guidance of Swami Shantmurti who was her main inspiration and influence during this time. After her son's birth in 1984 she began teaching a class for pregnancy which she continued doing until leaving NZ to sail through the islands for two years with her family before settling in Australia. Once there she completed another Naturopathic degree and has continued teaching regular yoga classes, realising her passion was in the speciality field of teaching yoga to pregnant women and treating them with natural medicines. She lives in the Hinterland of the Gold Coast, Australia where she has a Healing Centre from where she holds workshops and teaches on-going weekly classes of regular yoga and meditation as well as specialised classes for pregnant women. Theresa also teaches yoga and meditation privately for those who have specific needs either during pregnancy or for those people who require more personalised attention in other ways. She also enjoys teaching children of all ages, feeling that the skills, knowledge and awareness gained from doing regular Yoga and Meditation are an invaluable asset to have not only during childhood and adolescence but also throughout one's life.
