Description

The Small Fry team is back, this time on the subject of play! While today's overly-stimulated children seem to have less time or opportunities to engage in this most simple of childhood activities, Small Fry: Play encourages parents and carers to get back to basics and recognise free play as an essential part of their children's development.

Author Bio

Sue Cant has worked in early childhood for nearly thirty years. After completing her initial early childhood teaching qualification in Sydney, she headed off to the wilds of Papua New Guinea where she worked in international schools. Teaching preschool and infants classes, there were sometimes up to fourteen different nationalities among the children. There was no better beginning to her career, teaching her to be an effective communicator and a resourceful, creative and independent teacher. Two children and the better part of ten years later, she and her partner returned home to Australia where she worked for eight years in long-daycare centres, furthering her studies at the same time. In 1998, Sue and her family decided to make a tree change and moved to the beautiful Southern Highlands of NSW. For the last nine years she has worked fulltime teaching Child & Family Studies, running in-service training courses for early childhood workers and teaching parenting courses. People who know Sue will attest to the fact that she is deeply passionate about the right of children and families to quality early childhood services, the role of play in enhancing children's development and learning and, most of all, the importance of family. A keen social media enthusiast, Susie has worked in theatre, film and television, and has a background in communications, public relations, publicity, marketing and events. After having her two young boys, Susie decided to write about her own experience of raising children and achieving a work'life balance. Together, Katrina Crook and Susie have now produced three books in the Small Fry series: Inspiration for Cooking with Kids, Inspiration for being Outdoors with Kids and Inspiration for creative Play with Kids, all published by ABC Books. They have also collaborated on Mother Wisdom, published by Pan Macmillan. Small Fry Inspiration for Cooking with Kids was nominated as Best Children's Cookbook in the world last year in the Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards. Small Fry Outdoors was shortlisted for the Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children's Literature 2009. Susie's passion continues to be her 8 and 5 year- old boys as well as ongoing writing and communications projects, working with clients in Australia and New Zealand. Susie Cameron and Katrina Crook are not experts by any means: they're not nutritionists; they're not early childhood specialists; child psychologists; gourmet chefs or food stylists although some of the above have all helped on the book but they are mums. In a previous life, Susie specialised in marketing and PR in the entertainment industry. Katrina was an assistant cinematographer on feature films and is a professional photographer (Puberty Girl, Allen and Unwin and A Teenager's Survival Cookbook, Pan Macmillan).
