Every year, over 6,000 letters arrive in Verona, Italy, from around the world, all addressed to Shakespeares heroine Juliet. These letters seek guidance and advice about love and heartache from Juliet herself. Gathered by a group of female volunteers, collectively known as the Juliet Club, Juliets Secretaries, collect and respond to every letter.
Featuring 60 of these handwritten letters and responses, the letters in Dear Julietcapture the pain, joy, and confusion of love. Enclosed in a delicate and beautiful package, these letters provide encouragement, support, comfort, and delight to all readers. Each anonymous letter is printed in its original format to highlight the letters unique characteristics. And although love may be the universal language, all non-English letters feature a side-by-side translation. Presented in a luxe and romantic package, the book also comes with a postcard-sizecard for readers to fill in and send their own love note.
The Juliet Club was started in Verona in 1972 by Giulio Tamassia and a group of artists and scholars, who were united by their passion for the most famous Shakespearian Shakespeares most famous legend. Through the years, thanks to the collaboration and help of members and institutions, the Juliet Club has organised many events dedicated to the myth of Romeo and Juliet. On behalf of the Veronas Department of Culture, the Club today still handles Juliets mail, thousands of letters addressed to Shakespeares Juliet, involving a large worldwide community into the phenomenon.
Giulio Tamassia has been directing the Juliet Club since 2017, and continues to uphold her fathers legacy. She organises the Clubs events, including the Dear Juliet Award,, which is granted to the most beautiful letters; Juliets Birthday, which celebrates the famous literary character; and the international prize for literature, Scrivere per Amore (Writing for Love), dedicated to novels.
