"Out: Being Myself" is a touching memoir that depicts the life of a man who came out as gay after living in a heterosexual marriage for 34 years. With humor and honesty, the book describes his searing childhood, his closeted teenage and college years, then takes the reader into middle age, when the writer struggles to adjust to his new life in the gay community. The memoir ends with his move to Philadelphia, where he builds a new life and finds peace as a single, older, gay man.
Chris Madison is a former journalist and Congressional staffer based in Washington, DC from 1975 to 2019. He now lives in Philadelphia. Out: Being Myself, his first book, describes his experience coming out at 60 after being married to a woman for 34 years. The memoir, both funny and sad, candidly recalls his childhood growing up in the New York suburbs, as well as his high school and college years, when he hid his attraction to men even from himself. Later, the book describes his attempts at dating men in middle age and, finally, his new life as a single older gay man.
