Description

There are an estimated 85 million moms in the U.S. today, and life balance is a universal issue among them.

Americans are placing more value on self-care today: Companies are building gyms in their office buildings, insurance companies are offering discounts to fitness centers for clients who work out at least three times a week, and many fitness centers and corporations are offering day care.

Currently, 80 percent of women in the U.S. are dissatisfied with their appearance, and more than 10 million are suffering from eating disorders.

Maternal concerns about body weight may be the third leading cause of body image problems in adolescents, according to a study by Harvard Medical School researchers (The Harvard Crimson, Dec. 14, 2005). Research shows that girls as young as three years old are already emotionally invested in being thin, and some are dieting by the age of six (Live Science, November 16, 2010).

Over 12 million women are diagnosed with depression each year, and nearly 13 million women with an anxiety, and married women with children have higher rates of depression and anxiety than married women without children. These rates increase as the number of children in the home increases.
