Description

This inspiring, poetic book immerses the reader in an optimistic path toward finding our true place in the natural world. Combining essay, memoir, meditational exercises, and beautiful color photos, the author shows how the land and the human heart are, and have always been, completely interconnected.

Going well beyond modern religious, political and economic ideas, these reflections draw the reader into the intertwining realities of the Green World of nature and the Green Heart of humanity. They describe and celebrate ways to find kinship with one another and with the entire more-than-human world, both material and spiritual.

Green Hearts in a Green World explores subjects ranging from sacred ceremony to social and ecological justice; from becoming more "woke" to overcoming trauma; from life-affirming, ancestral beliefs and actions to the human-centered cruelty of the modern world. Every essay compassionately invites us to know ourselves as essentially heart- and earth-centered people, and to return to our deep, authentic selves.

This book affirms again and again the generous reality of nature's Green World of which we are a part, and whose inhabitants and powers irresistibly reflect and inform who we truly are.

Reviews

"A potent collection of gems whose time is NOW. If Mother Earth were able to speak to us in actual words, these are the stories and lessons she would impart to us, reminding us that we are 'part of her vast, powerful, living, responsive intelligence'--and that our very existence depends on us waking up to this reality!"
--Lani Hill, Somatic Therapist, Waldorf Educational Support Teacher

"These essays offer readers an opportunity to remember who we are as a species-- members of a great community of emergent life on Earth. Mary Janet shares her cogent observations of the consequences of humans acting as if we are separate from, instead of being part of, the web of life. She provides inspiration, practices and hope for turning the human story around to one in which we live in a mutually enhancing way with the natural world."
--Jessie Wilder, Founder of the Blue Ridge Naturalist Program, North Carolina Arboretum, Asheville, NC.
