Description

A transformative guide to breaking free from impulsive habits and living a more intentional life, from an expert clinical psychologist Do you want to live a life driven by intention, not impulse Discover how with this expert and eye-opening guide to the little-understood but powerful neurotransmitter that steers our habits- dopamine. Shopping, eating, social media, sex, drugs and gambling are just some of the things that can trigger a release of dopamine, a key neurotransmitter in our brain's reward system. Responsible for everything from memory to mood, dopamine has a huge influence on our behaviours and the disruptive habits that conflict with our values - though most of us don't even realise it. In The Dopamine Brain, clinical psychologist Dr Anastasia Hronis lifts the lid on dopamine - what it really is, how it functions inside our brains and how it drives the daily choices that ultimately shape our lives. Packed with the latest research in neuroscience and psychology, fascinating case studies, personal stories and actionable advice, The Dopamine Brain will empower you to understand your own dopamine drive so you can live a balanced life of pleasure and purpose.

Reviews

The Dopamine Brain masterfully bridges the gap between complex neuroscientific
concepts and everyday life, offering readers a clear and engaging exploration of how
dopamine influences our behaviour. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to recalibrate their life's choices and live more deliberately.

-- Dr Rachel Menzies, The University of Sydney
Dr Anastasia mixes science, clinical stories, and even history in an intriguing story-like format about how dopamine is related to many things we do in every life, including gambling, drug abuse, excessive social media use and binge-watching TV. This book will help find the balance between pleasure and purpose, using scientific theories of how the brain works. -- Professor Ahmed Moustafa, Head of School of Psychology and Head of Discipline (Criminology and Counselling) at Bond University

The Dopamine Brain was a fascinating and engaging read. Not only did it provide me
with a wealth of information on how this neurotransmitter is produced in the brain and
affects thought processes, but it also gave me the means to put this knowledge to
practical use in my own life to more successfully live out my own values.

-- Ted Hartwell, Executive Director at the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling
