Description

A deeply personal yet scientifically rigorous and objective exploration of another way of living 'the good life'. Embrace the transformative power of variety and experience for a life of fulfilment. We've been told that a good life is a stable life, a comfortable life that follows a well-trodden path. But, with the complacency it fosters, can a happy life, or even a meaningful life, really be a good life In Life in Three Dimensions, one of our foremost psychologists Shige Oishi proposes a third dimension to a good life- psychological richness, a concept that prioritizes curiosity, exploration and a variety of experiences that help us grow as people. Weaving his own story with original research from fields ranging from moral philosophy, literature, culture, neuroscience, personality and psychology, Oishi proves that psychological richness has benefits beyond happiness or meaning. Ultimately, we see how anyone can use the three dimensions - happiness, meaning and psychological richness - to build a fuller, more satisfying life.

Reviews

Many people want more out of life than happiness. They want to embrace life in all its variety and possibility. Until now, psychology has had little to offer such people. Not any more. Shige Oishi sees humanity in new ways and has made many discoveries about happiness that have eluded researchers before him. Life in Three Dimensions will give you new insights into the many ways to live well, including advice on how to pick the one most likely to be right for you. * Jonathan Haidt, author of Sunday Times bestselling The Anxious Generation *
Shige Oishis idea of the psychologically rich life is my favourite new idea - and the most major advance to emerge in happiness science in decades. With a blend of engaging stories, modern scientific research and practical applications, his Life in Three Dimensions demonstrates how we can cultivate a life that is not only happy and meaningful but also rich in varied and profound experiences. Although it may sound like a clich, I truly believe that this book will inspire you to understand - and then live - your best, fullest and most authentic life. Run, dont walk, to buy this book. * Sonja Lyubomirsky, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside and author of The How of Happiness *
The Rich Life, Shige Oishi persuasively argues, is a Good Life, a third major choice over the Happy Life and the Meaningful Life. And Oishi tells us how to get there. An eye-opening book for all who are stuck. * Dr. Martin E.P. Seligman, Director of the Penn Positive Psychology Centre and author of Learned Optimism *
No one knows more about the science of well-being than Shigehiro Oishi. In this wonderful new book he shares a lifetime of discovery about what it means to live a good life. Life in Three Dimensions is insightful, original and wise. * Daniel Gilbert, Edgar Pierce Professor of Psychology, Harvard University and author of bestseller Stumbling on Happiness *
This spectacular book is a page-turner: you will be entranced by the charming narrative and poignant anecdotes. But more importantly, the wisdom it conveys about a psychologically rich life, based on the latest scientific research, will change how you live. * Timothy D. Wilson, author of Redirect: Changing the Stories We Live By *
